SUA History
Since 1972, Suncoast Umpires Association has been operating as a baseball only umpires group providing Pinellas County, FL high schools with officials for baseball games.
A constitution, complete with by-laws and policies and procedures, was developed so that SUA could receive sanction by the FHSAA. SUA has maintained this status uninterrupted for 28 years, showing that it is an association striving to continue to grow and invigorate itself.
Recruitment of new and experienced officials is crucial to surviving as a group. Once these officials are accepted, SUA has pledged to continue each umpire's education through training and experience. Every year SUA holds extensive reviews of the rules of baseball and in 1999 our dedication was recognized by the FHSAA as the association with the highest average test scores for baseball in the state of Florida. SUA's members have also been recognized individually by the FHSAA with ten and twenty year plaques commemorating their continued service.
On-field training clinics are developed by graduates of professional umpire training schools and are held yearly by the SUA. MLB umpires are frequent guest lecturers and minor league staff umpires are always present to lend their experience. SUA is also proud to include collegiate staff umpires in our working ranks that also lend invaluable experience to our younger umpires.
